Join Whitehall’s Landscape Director Mike Hayman as he discusses his efforts to replace Louisville’s lost tree canopy over the last 30 years.
Mike first became interested in trees after a downburst devastated his neighborhood of Seneca Gardens in 1987, destroying 100 large trees in a neighborhood of 300 homes. He quickly became the “tree czar” for the neighborhood and began connecting with arborists and other experts all over the country.
Mike joined the Whitehall Board of Regents in the 1990s and has spent the past 30 years turning the grounds into an arboretum, highlighted by the Woodland Garden.
More recently, he has been a volunteer and contractor for TreesLouisville. Mike has literally planted thousands of trees across the metro area. He is focused on planting trees that will live for 100 years or more, and experimenting with species that will thrive despite climate change.
