Peony Festival

2017 Date to be determined

This year's Peony Festival will offer multiple activities:

Peonies on Display

Although the public is always welcome to tour Whitehall's gardens from throughout the day from sunup to sundown, the date of our Peony Festival has been selected as when we estimate Whitehall's impressive collection of over 60 peony varieties will be at their peak.  There is no charge to visit the gardens.

Guided Garden Tours

For those interested in learning more about Whitehall's gardens, guided tours will be offered during the Peony Festival at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.  Guided tour admission is $5 per person; reservations are not required.

Floral Arranging Demonstration & Peony Talk with Slideshow

This year's Peony Festival will also feature a joint presentation inside the Whitehall mansion at 4 p.m. by floral designer Wayne Esterle and noted horticulturist Don Smith.  Mr. Esterle will demonstrate how to create beautiful and lasting arrangements with cut peonies.  Mr. Smith will present a brief slideshow lecture on the basics of growing peonies, concluded by a Q&A session.  The cost for attending this presentation is $15 per person; reservations are not required.

Peony & Rare Tree Plant Sale

A limited selection of herbaceous peonies and rare trees will also be offered for sale.  The Peony & Rare Tree Plant Sale will begin at 5:30 p.m.  Please note that early access to the sale area will not be permitted.

The following are some of the peonies and trees to be featured in the sale.  Peonies will be planted in 1 gallon pots.  The trees will be small and planted in 3 gallon pots.

Wayne Esterle

Floral designer Wayne Esterle, AIFD, opened his first shop, Designs by Wayne, in 1982.  In the early years, Designs by Wayne was geared toward the 'everyday' aspects of the floral business, focusing on funerals, hospitals, holidays and weddings as a mainstay of the business.  In 1992, as many traditional flower shops began facing market challenges, Mr. Esterle re-directed his business strategy and began operating as In Bloom Again.  While continuing to fill everyday orders, the primary focus became special events, including weddings, parties, corporate events and more.  Partnered with the Event Company, In Bloom Again designs both local and national events.  His clients include Brown-Forman, Humana, General Electric, Caesars Indiana, The Seelbach Hilton and The Camberly Brown Hotel.

Don Smith

Noted horticulturist Don Smith was the previous owner of Pinecliffe Daylily Gardens, is an Advanced Master Gardener, a Certified Garden Designer, national horticulture speaker, and a hybridizer of award winning daylilies and peonies.  Mr. Smith serves on numerous horticulture boards, including the Board of Directors of the American Peony Society and is Founder and Chairman of the Midwest Peony Society.  He is involved in many gardening activities in the region including speaking, demonstrations, and presentations on gardens based on his world travels.  He recently was the featured speaker at horticulture events in Boston, Indianapolis, Louisville, Charlestown, San Diego, Minneapolis and Nashville.
